Penedes wine region is one of the closest wine regions to the Barcelona metropolitan area. Despite its closeness to the city, as you drive south west out of the city and into the rocky hills of the Garraf Massif with Montserrat (the serrated mountain)showing its serrated ridge over the opposite side of the valley, you couldn't feel farther away from the concrete jungle of Barcelona. A very diverse wine region with grapes growing at sea level to 2,500 feet, most styles of wines can be found in the region. This is where Cava (sparkeling wine) was born and is still produced, and therefore often takes the spotlight for grape production in the area. It is also one of the only wine producing regions in the world that is nearing their goal of being 100% organic, and many wineries go a step further with biodynamic methods. This all makes for a very interesting and unique winery experience for the beginner or advanced wine masters.  Another type of cheese known as Mató, made from goats is also famous in the region. Our visit to these cheese producers is great way to learn about a Catalan food making tradition that stretches back to the middle ages, and of course a great way to sample some of the most delicious cheeses in the world! Lunch options in the area are dependent on peoples requests, though our local knowledge and your input guarantees a meal that is healthy, ethical and slow!
