Montserrat Monestary: Art & Nature

Montserrat or "serrated mountain" in Catalan, is a natural park area consisting of unique conglomerate rock formations that have inspired seekers and pilgrims and ritual activity since the earliest times of recorded human activity in the area. It lies about 45 miles northwest of Barcelona and can be visited in a day. In this spectacular setting a benedictine monastery was established in 1020 with an even older legend that tells of the inspiration behind its foundation. Join us as we explore the spirituality, history and symbols of the monastery which contain many interesting stories and traditions. Also not to be missed is the very underrated museum here that features works of Dali, Picaso, Carravagio and Monet, as well as a rich archaeological collection from the biblical middle east and Eygpt. Montserrat natural park has amazing hiking trails that beckon to be explored; a two hour hike will take you to the highest point while a quick (40 min) and easy walk takes us past 15 works created by Modernista artists such as Antonio Gaudi and the artistic guild of Saint Luke, and then on to a grotto/chapel where legend has it the statue of the maddona was discovered. As we have excellent local knowledge of the area, we know of a family run farm/restaurante in a beautiful outdoor setting at the foot of the mountain where we feast on food produced and grown by the owners. Interested in chatting with a Monk? That can be arranged. For the more outdoor-minded, a picnic on top of the tallest peak might be in order.
